Zoltán Zámori

Date of birth:
1930.
Place of birth:
Budapest
Date of death:
2009.
Education, professional qualification:
  • physicist - ELTE
  • Academic degree:
Candidate of Hungarian Academy of Sciences - 1964

He began his professional activity in the physics department of the Military Engineering Institute (radiation measurement, dosimetry). From there he moved to the Central Physical Research Institute (KFKI) to prepare the measurement technology for the nuclear physics experiments planned around the nuclear reactor under construction. During the experiments, he came into contact with early versions of computers. He played an encouraging role in the domestic creation of small computers suitable for automation tasks, and set an example in their use.

Meanwhile, after receiving his PhD, he spent a year on a scholarship in Krakow and Hamilton, Ontario (developing nuclear physics measurements and measuring instruments). Here he became acquainted with real large computers for scientific purposes, as well as the "on-line" use of small machines.

From 1972, he worked for three years as deputy director of the Computer Engineering and Automation Laboratory in Dubna (SSU), where he participated in the installation of medium and large CDC machines purchased there. However, he felt that his real task was to win over users who had fallen under the spell of these large machines to the versatile and increasingly accessible mini- and — epoch-defining — micro-machines.

After that, he worked as a senior research fellow at the Institute of Measurement and Computing Technology (MSZKI) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The Eötvös Loránd Physical Society recognized his work in 1985 by awarding him the (shared) Prometheus Medal.
