János Vértes
In 1972, after graduating from university, he started programming at Videoton, and after installing one of the first Videoton 1010B computers at the Volán Company in Fehérvár, he became the head of programmers at the transportation company. He wrote a programming and operator manual for the Videoton 1010B (also known as the R-10) computer, which Videoton later included as documentation for the Videoton 1010B machine.
He became a journalist in 1977. He remained connected to computer science through an economic working group (GMK) founded in 1981: the Kronosz Computer Society wrote business management programs for PCs for companies such as ÁFOR (the later predecessor of MOL) or the Győri Hőtechnikai Vállalat.
His interest in journalism and IT merged in computer science journalism from 1986: he became a founding member of the then-forming Computerworld Information Technology Publishing Company (later IDG), a specialist writer for CW Computer Science, and the editor-in-chief of Mikrovilág.
In 1991, he founded an independent computer publishing house; it published the weekly VGA Monitor, a series of newsletters, and from 1996, the Internet Kalauz and Business Online magazines. He also edited the weekly/monthly IT supplements of several national newspapers, and published the PC-help stapler book (based on the German PC Klipp und Klar). In 1998, he launched the first online IT news magazine, Prím Online, which was expanded with Kütyü Magazine in the 2000s. In 2008, he received the Attila Kovács Award as IT journalist of the year, a joint award of the NJSZT, the Association of IT, Telecommunications and Electronics Enterprises (IVSZ) and the Information Technology for Society Association (Infotér).
In the early 2000s, after the crisis of paper newspapers, he reoriented his company to the distribution of software developed for online publications. Among these, the ad server program achieved significant market success; based on this system, he founded Adverticum Zrt., Hungary's leading ad server (so-called advertisement) service provider, of which he has been the president since 2001. He founded the subsidiary of Adverticum Zrt. – DataMe Kft. – in 2017; this is the first Data Management Platform in Hungary.
The 19th member of the professional organization Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe (IAB Europe), IAB Hungary ranked him among the three most influential people who have done the most for online marketing in 2012 – on the 15th anniversary of its establishment.
- When asked how someone can be a mathematician and a journalist at the same time, he answered in several interviews: mathematics is not about dry numbers, but about abstraction: distinguishing the essential from the unessential. Well, that's the job of a journalist too.
