József Tóth

After graduating from university, he was an intern at the Gödöllő University of Agricultural Sciences (GATE) in 1957-1958; between 1958-1973 he was an assistant professor, assistant professor, and then associate professor at the Debrecen University of Agricultural Sciences (DATE). In 1958, he was the first to organize scientific research on the agricultural application of operations research and computer technology at the university. He also introduced the teaching of several new subjects. Between 1973-1976, he was the head of the department at GATE.

Between 1976 and 1992 he held various positions at DATE: director of the institute, head of the department, and from 1977 to 1983 rector. In 1978 he established and managed the computer laboratory, organized the development of computerized agricultural application systems and managed their use. He was director of the institute from 1982 to 1991, and head of the Department of Economic Mathematics and Computer Science from 1989 to 1990.

In 1992, as a pensioner, he established a foundation to support healthcare, science and education, which he managed for years as the chairman of the board of trustees. He also established a limited liability company dealing with foreign trade and wholesale trade: between 2000 and 2002, he was the founder and CEO of the “Őrhegy 2001” joint-stock company, from which position he resigned two years later due to his health condition.

He has been conducting scientific work since 1958, on the application of mathematics and computer technology to agricultural enterprises and then macroeconomics. In the process, he developed several mathematical models that were also applied in practice, and formulated several economic laws.
Author of 5 books, co-author of 3 books, author of approx. 200 articles and 160 studies. University Doctor (1961), Candidate of Agricultural Sciences (1968), Doctor of Agricultural Sciences (1977).

He participated in various domestic and international committees and organizations: KMST Computer Science Working Committee, the Editorial Board of the Economic Review, the Operations Research Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Operations Research Committee of the Hungarian National Academy of Sciences, etc.
