András Sugár
After graduating from university, he worked as a TV and FM transmitter development engineer at the Electromechanical Company (EMV).
Between 1974 and 1980, he worked in the Trade Development Department of the Ministry of Foreign Trade. Between 1980 and 1985, he was Deputy Trade Counselor at the New York Trade Office.
In 1985, he was appointed commercial director of Intercooperation Rt., and later became the company's deputy CEO.
Between 1988 and 1991, he was the commercial director and then deputy CEO of Transelektro Rt.
Between 1991 and 1993, he was the CEO of Westel Radiotelefon Kft.; as is known, mobile phone service in Hungary began with the establishment of this company.
Then, from 1993 to 2005, he managed the development of GSM mobile networks, services and high-speed mobile data transmission as CEO of Westel Rt. and then T-Mobile Magyarország Rt. Their outstanding achievements were the EFQM European Quality Award in 2001, and the fact that on April 19, 2002, Westel Rt. was the first in the world to launch the MMS service, which provides the sending of messages containing images, sound and text.
His areas of expertise include: radio and UHF developments, international finance, domestic and global marketing, business management skills, and mobile network and service development.
He was the President of the Joint Venture Association (1991-1995), the President of the Prince of Wales Business Leader Forum (1995-2000), the President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hungary (AMCHAM) (1995-2000), and the President of the Hungarian Investors Council (2003-2006).
His awards: Gábor Baross Award (Minister of Transport, Communications and Water, KHVM, 1998); Mihailich Award (BME Institute of Engineering, 1999); President of the Republic Gold Medal (2000); Best Business Leader in Hungary (Business Central Europe, 2000); Unparalleled Man for Our Future (Junior Achievement program Hungary, 2001); Leadership Quality Award (Dale Carnegie, Washington 2001); European Quality Award (Luzern, (EFQM, 2001); Business Excellence Award (Deutsche Telekom. 2001); The Most Trusted Service Provider (Readers Digest, 2002); Middle Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2004).
In 1993, The Wall Street Journal named him one of the most influential Central European businessmen of the next ten years.
- In 1999, he received an award for Budapest.
- In 1999, he was made an honorary citizen of the Budapest University of Economics (BKE), and in 2003, he received the title of Honorary College Professor of the Kandó Kálmán Technical College (KKMF).
- He was the president of the Hungarian Golf Association between 2006 and 2017.
- In 2006, he was awarded the Kis Ernő Award at the opening of the Anna Ball in Balatonfüred.
- In 2006, he was elected Honorary Consul of the Republic of Malta.
