Péter Simon

Date of birth:
1949.09.17.
Place of birth:
Nagymaros
Education, professional qualification:
  • High school teacher in mathematics and physics - ELTE - 1973.
  • Academic degree:
Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences - 2006

Since graduating from university, he has been working continuously at the Department of Numerical and Computer Mathematics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (TTK) of ELTE, and then at the Department of Numerical Analysis of the Faculty of Informatics (IK) that was formed from it. He was an assistant professor until 1978, an assistant professor from 1978, and an associate professor from 1983. He was appointed a university professor in 2003, and professor emeritus from September 2019. Between 2004 and 2015, he was the head of the Department of Numerical Analysis of ELTE IK. In 1975 and 1976, he also worked as a second-year research assistant at the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology (BME).

He has given lectures and guided exercises in various departments at ELTE, as well as in the doctoral school and teacher training courses, in the areas of analysis, numerical analysis, function series, approximation theory, complex function theory, differential geometry, differential equations, measure and integral theory, functional analysis, real function theory, and Fourier analysis.

Since 1973, he has actively participated in the development and elaboration of the educational system for programmers, then program designers, mathematicians and computer scientists. He has written numerous educational materials in the aforementioned fields, among which the 8-volume book series published between 2015 and 2020 is worth highlighting. He has received the title of Outstanding Instructor of the Faculty of Informatics at ELTE three times.

He actively participated in university public life. He was a member of the Faculty Council, the Council of the Institute of Mathematics and the Council of the Department of Informatics, the Faculty Council of the Institute of Informatics, and various educational, curriculum, study, etc. committees at ELTE TTK. He is the chairman of the Professorial Council of the Faculty of Informatics.

He received his doctorate from ELTE in 1975, and then defended his candidate's thesis in 1982. He habilitated at ELTE in 2002. He defended his academic doctoral thesis in 2005.

His research area is harmonic analysis. He has investigated various types of convergence and approximation issues primarily for the Walsh-Paley and Vilenkin systems, as well as the Walsh-Kaczmarz system. His publications have appeared in refereed journals, with one or two exceptions in foreign languages. He has several joint papers with renowned co-authors, both Hungarian and foreign. He is a co-author of the English-language monograph summarizing the results of one of the most important models of harmonic analysis, the so-called dyadic analysis (Walsh-Fourier analysis), which was published jointly by Akadémiai Kiadó and the English Adam Hilger Publishing House in 1990 under the title “Walsh Series: An Introduction to Dyadic Harmonic Analysis”. The book was awarded a prize by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Akadémiai Kiadó in 1992.

He has been a regular contributor to Mathematical Reviews since 1981. He was a member of the Mathematics Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' General Body, and the editorial board of the journals Annales Universitatis Scientiarum ... Sectio Computatorica and Periodica Mathematica Hungarica.

His most important awards: Academic Merit Medal (ELTE, 1973); Kató Rényi Memorial Award (Bolyai János Mathematical Society, 1973); For Excellent Work (Minister of Education, 1985); Natural Science Award (ELTE TTK, 1987); György Alexits Award (MTA, 1989); Pro Facultate Informatica (ELTE IK, 2009); ELTE Memorial Medal (2014); Officer's Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit (2014).
