He was a member of the Automata Theory Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences at the József Attila University of Szeged (JATE). He mainly researched programming theory, including compiler writing systems.
In the early 1980s, starting from the specification of the HLP (Helsinki Language Processor) system, he and his colleagues created the "HLP/Szeged" compiler writing system, which was based on object-oriented principles. This system and the related research results attracted international interest.
