Szilveszter Rochlitz
From 1968 he taught at the Kossuth Lajos University of Debrecen (KLTE). In the meantime, he spent a longer time at the MTA Computer Center (SZK), where he became familiar with programming the Ural 2 machine. In 1972, as one of the first six lecturers of the then-established Department of Computer Science at the KLTE, he actively participated in the training of programming mathematicians.
When the University received its first computer (a low-performance ODRA machine) in 1967, he was transferred to the then-established Computing Center. As the software engineer for the ever-expanding computer park, he was also deeply involved in the documentation of computer solutions to scientific and technical problems, in addition to managing the development of various application programs.
In 1984, he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Application of computational methods in the study of the properties of tissue antigens.” He worked at the Computing Center until mid-1992.
He was a member of the ODRA Working Committee, established by the NJSZT in 1971.
In 1992, the NJSZT awarded him the Neumann Prize for his work.
- “… The first mathematicians who program received their diplomas on June 27, 1972. The members of the class gathered in front of the main building for their 40th anniversary meeting, 13 out of the 21 graduates. As the first point of the program, they commemorated their deceased class leader, Dr. Szilveszter Rochlitz, their teachers, and their classmates in the cemetery…” (Source unavailable: http://alumni.unideb.hu/hir_40-eves-talalkozo-unideb-2015-07-16)
- After the appearance of the second generation ODRA machines, the ODRA Working Committee, established by the NJSZT in 1971, was chaired by Andor Frigyes and its secretary was Zoltán Bellus. Other members were: János Jakobi (ELTE); Lajos Fábián, János Milcsák, Bálint Juhász (GATE); Szilveszter Rochlitz (KLTE).
