    Between 1971 and 1984, he was a researcher at the Telecommunications Research Institute. He has been teaching at ELTE since 1972. Between 1984 and 1990, he was a full-time lecturer at the Department of Computer Science at ELTE, and since then, he has been a part-time lecturer. He has been a university professor since 1988.

    Since 1990, he has been a professor at the Budapest University of Technology (BME). Between 1990 and 2011, he was head of the Department of Computer Science and Information Theory (SZIT). Between 2000 and 2004, he was a Széchenyi Professorship. Between 2012 and 2017, he was head of the Doctoral School of Mathematics and Computer Science. Since 2017, he has been professor emeritus.

    Since 2009, he has been the scientific director of the Aquincum Institute of Technology (AIT).

    He was a visiting professor for a long time in the USA (Cornell University, Yale University), Canada, Germany and Japan.

    His research interests include matroid theory, combinatorial optimization and their technical applications. He is the author or co-author of several major professional books.

    He has been a member of the Bolyai János Mathematical Society (BJMT) since 1969, and was the Society's Secretary General between 2006 and 2015. He was the Vice-Chairman of the Mathematics Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 1999 and 2005.

    Awards: Kató Rényi Prize (BJMT, 1971); Géza Grünwald Prize (BJMT, 1975); Gyula Farkas Prize (BJMT, 1977); MTESZ Prize (1984); Alexander von Humboldt Scholarship (1987-89); John von Neumann Research Prize (University of Bonn, 1998); Eötvös Prize (Minister of Education, 2013).
