Education, professional qualification:
  • industrial economist - MKKE - 1953.

  • In 1949, he applied to the College of Fine Arts, wanting to become a painter and drawing teacher, but ultimately ended up at the Marx Károly University of Economics (MKKE).
After graduating from university, he was employed at Ganz Electric Works, where he performed design and presentation tasks.

In 1956, he was assigned to the Information Technology Directorate (HIRIG) of the Ministry of Metallurgy and Mechanical Industry (KGM) with planning and reporting duties, and later served as head of the economics department until 1968. He regularly published in the professional journal Ipargazdaság. One of his colleagues there suggested writing a joint book; he took on the topic of long-term planning of mechanical engineering companies, but during the processing of the professional literature, this became a separate volume, which was followed by four more.
His work as a professional writer meant that from 1962 he was a regular lecturer on the subject at the Technical University of Heavy Industry (NME) in Miskolc, and he also held courses and lectures in numerous places.

In 1968, the Hungarian Information Technology Association (MHE) was established within the framework of the new economic mechanism. The Association was established by the large information technology companies of the time to help these companies with their organizational issues by providing solutions and data processing. Károly Pogány worked as the head of the economics and organizational department of the MHE until 1970.
In 1970, the Computer and Organization Center of the Hungarian Telecommunications Association (MHE SZSZK, later Comporgan Rendszerház) was founded, of which he was deputy director until 1981. From 1981 until his retirement in 1990, he was the director of MHE SZSZK (later Comporgan).

He was among the first to initiate and achieve significant success in the field of Hungarian software engineers working in Western Europe; in fact, in the 1980s, several software products produced by the company were sold in Germany, France and England. In an effort to generalize international experiences and innovations, he successfully applied Western know-how to domestic conditions in the field of organization. In order to increase the efficiency of the domestic organizational culture, he initiated (together with others) the establishment of the Comporgan-Diebold joint venture.

He attributed a prominent role to human resources policy in his activities, which he implemented not only in the areas of training and education, but also introduced regular health screenings for the company's employees; the company also provided two of its own resorts for its employees.
With the change of regime in 1990 (and his retirement), the company also ceased to exist, as a significant part of the founding members were privatized.

He was a prominent figure in the organization of computer centers within Hungarian computer technology in the 1970s and 1980s.
