In the 1940s, he was a radio technician at the United Light.
After 1945, he was the head of radio reconnaissance in the military intelligence service with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was arrested and convicted in 1950 on trumped-up charges, released in 1953, and rehabilitated in September 1956.
From 1957, he worked as a punch card specialist at the Cybernetics Research Group (KKCS) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, where he was involved in programming and was the (only) expert in data processing. Later, he became the head of the department of the Library Science and Methodology Center.

- In the 1930s and 1940s, he was an illegal communist under the name Ernő Bachner, one of the organizers of the March Front. He participated in the military resistance.
- His name was sometimes recorded as Ernő Pataki, and was recorded.
- His hobby was boating, and he organized the rowing life of the KKCS.
