    From 1982 to 1986, he worked as a designer in the Electronics Department of the Chemical Design Company (Vegyterv). From 1986, he was a full-time teacher-researcher (assistant professor, assistant professor, then associate professor) at BME: from 1986 at the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of BME, from 1999 at the Department of Differential Equations, from 2009 at the Department of Communications of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, from 2016 at the Department of Control Engineering and Informatics. In addition, he was the director of the United Innovation and Knowledge Center of BME from 2010.

    In 1988-1995 he was an external associate at the Mathematical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

    In parallel with his teaching and research activities, he was active in public life between 1990 and 2010. He was a representative of the capital between 1990 and 1994, chairman of the Capital Media Committee (1993-1994), and vice-chairman of the Economic Committee (1990-1994). Between 1995-1998, he was a member of the National Informatics Strategy Steering Committee and co-chairman of the National Association of Strategic Service Providers.
    From 1994 to 1998, he was Undersecretary of State for Transport, Communications and Water Affairs.

    He was Minister of the Ministry of Information and Communications (IHM), established in 2002, and then State Secretary for Environment and Water Affairs between 2006 and 2008.
    Member of Parliament between 1998 and 2010, Vice-Chairman of the Economic Committee of the Hungarian Parliament (1998-2002), Vice-Chairman of the eInclusion (IT) Committee of the Hungarian Parliament (2008-2010).
    For several years, he was co-chair of the Hungarian-Slovenian Joint Water Management Committee and a member of the Research, Technology and Innovation Council.

    In the professional and scientific field, he was an Eisenhower Fellow in the United States in 2001. Between 2005 and 2008, he was a member of the Advisory Board of the UN Internet Governance Forum, and between 2007 and 2010, he was a member of the board of owners of the Regional Environmental Center based in Szentendre. Since 1995, he has been a member of the Hungarian Space Research Council (chairman for 12 years); since 2012, he has been the chairman of the BME Space Forum; since 2013, he has been the chairman of the Smart City Forum (Future Internet National Technology Platform); since 2015, he has been the chairman of the organizing committee of the H-Space International Space Research, Space Technology and Space Education Conference; since 2012, he has been a member of the supervisory board of the National Space Research and Space Education Association. He is a member and official of several other professional and public organizations (Hungarian Astronautical Society, Bolyai János Mathematical Society, etc.).

    Since 2016, he has been the president of the Bay Zoltán Foundation for the History of Science and Technology, and previously the founding president and then honorary president of the Foundation for Talented Hungary (2005-2016), the Újpalota Cable Television Provider Association (1989-1991), and the Vállalkozás 2000 Metropolitan Entrepreneurship Training Foundation (1991-2015).
