    Between 1971 and 2008, he taught at the Babeș–Bolyai University of Science and Technology (BBTE) in Cluj-Napoca: assistant professor (1971), assistant professor (1990), associate professor (1992), university professor (1998), and then doctoral supervisor university professor (2005).

    Between 1998-2000 and 2004-2007, he was deputy dean at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the BBTE, and vice-rector of the university between 2000-2004. Since 2008, he has been a professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the Sapientia Transylvania Hungarian University of Science (Sapientia EMTE); between 2008-2012, he was the scientific director of the university, and between 2012-2016, he was the president of the senate. Since 2018, he has been a professor emeritus at Sapientia EMTE. Four doctoral candidates have received their doctorates under his supervision within the framework of the BBTE Doctoral School of Informatics.

    His professional field of activity is theoretical computer science, including combinatorics and graph theory. Among the university subjects he has taught are Programming Languages, Programming Methods, Formal Languages and Automata, Data Structures, Complexity of Algorithms, Graph Theory Algorithms.

    He is the author or co-author of several textbooks in Hungarian, Romanian and English. He has also dealt with the history of science; he has published several articles on the history of mathematics on this topic, and directed a documentary film about mathematics education at the former Bolyai University.

    He is a member of the editorial board of Matlap (published by Radó Ferenc Matematikaművelő Társaság) for high school students and the editor-in-chief of FIRKA (Physics, Informatics, Chemistry Foundations – published by EMT). He is the editor-in-chief of the Informatica series of the journal Acta Universitatis Sapientiae. He is a co-editor of Historia Scientiarum, published by the Transylvanian Hungarian Technical Scientific Society (EMT).

    Between 1992 and 1994, he was the vice-president of the EMT, between 2007 and 2011, he was the vice-president of the Cluj-Napoca Academic Committee, since 2008, he has been the co-president of the History of Science Department of the EMT, and since 2020, he has been the president of the Mathematics, Informatics and Astronomy Committee of the Cluj-Napoca Academic Committee.

    His awards: Pro Scientia Transsylvanica (EMT, Cluj-Napoca, 2000); Certificate of Merit of the Association of Hungarian Teachers in Romania (2001); Neumann Memorial Plaque (NJSZT, 2006); Gr. Mikó Imre Memorial Plaque and Plaque (Transylvanian Museum Association, EME, Cluj-Napoca, 2007); Szilágysági Hungarians Certificate of Merit (Báthory István Foundation, Szilágysomlyó, 2008); Knight's Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit (2017); Pro Facultate Informatica Memorial Medal (ELTE Faculty of Informatics, 2018).
