Tibor Gyimóthy
He started working in the MTA-SZTE (SZTE: University of Szeged) Automata Theory Research Group, directed by László Kalmár, and then continued his work in the MTA-SZTE Artificial Intelligence Research Group. He was awarded the Széchenyi Professorship between 1998 and 2002. Since 2003, he has been the head of the Department of Software Development at the Institute of Informatics of SZTE. He has implemented a project-based education strategy at the department: talented students acquire development competencies through real tasks in addition to traditional university education. Since 2017, he has been the head of the MTA-SZTE Artificial Intelligence Research Group.
His initial research area was the optimization of compilers to reduce the memory and energy consumption of generated code. He was a five-time program committee member of the International Conference on Compiler Construction, one of the most important scientific forums in the field. In 1996, he was the conference program committee chairman.
Later, his main research direction was to explore the quality problems of information systems, which also includes the management of security and maintainability issues. He played a significant role in the development of program slicing methods, which serve as the theoretical basis of the research field. He also intensively researches the possibilities of artificial intelligence, including language technology and machine learning applications, in various areas of software development.
In 2008, he obtained the title of Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, while in 2019 he was elected a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and in 2025, a full member.
Member of the Board of Trustees of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for Mathematics and Natural Sciences (2006-2008); member of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Committee of the National Scientific Research Foundation (OTKA) (2008-2010); member of the Mathematics Committee of the Hungarian Higher Education Accreditation Committee (MAB) (2008-2010), then of the Technical Committee (2011-2017); Chairman of the Informatics and Computer Science Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2009-2017); member of the Mathematics Committee of the OTKA (2015-2017), member of the Doctoral Committee for Mathematics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2009-).
He has been a four-time program committee member of the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE), the world's leading scientific forum in the field of software engineering. He was the chairman of the European Software Engineering Conference (ESEC)/ ACM Foundations of Software Engineering (FSE) conference in 2011. He was the chairman of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society Central and Eastern European Initiatives Committee (1999-2001).
He managed the work of the Hungarian Software Technology Forum scientific event series, which was established in 2002 under the leadership of László Bélády within the framework of the Hungarian Software Technology Association (NJSZT), for several years.
Awards: Kalmár Award (NJSZT, 1997); Academic Award (MTA, 2011); Award for the most influential article of the last 10 years at the International Conference on Software Maintenance (2012); Dénes Gábor Award (Novofer Foundation, 2013); Albert Szent-Györgyi Award (Minister of Human Resources, 2015); Civilian Division of the Officer's Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit (2021).
