Géza Gordos
After graduating from university, he became a lecturer at the Budapest University of Technology (BME) in the Department of Telecommunications. He received his PhD in 1977, his habilitation at BME in 1994, and his doctorate in 1995. He earned a degree in educational management from Harvard University in 1992. He rose through the ranks at the Department of Telecommunications and Media Informatics (TMIT - and its legal predecessors): from 1976 he was the head of the department for 26 years; from 2007 he was professor emeritus. He was the vice-rector for science at BME for 6 years.
In addition to his university teaching work, he participated in numerous industrial research projects, led domestic and international R&D projects, and carried out expert and consulting work. He was a visiting professor at renowned foreign universities, such as Imperial College in England and the University of Salford in Manchester. He also worked with Dénes Gábor for months.
He has held numerous leadership positions in education and industry: from 1987 as director of the Engineering Training Center for Foreign Students at BME, then as president of the Inter-University Telecommunications and Informatics Center; as chairman of the board of directors of MATÁV Rt., and as founding director of the Bay Zoltán Industrial Communication Technology Institute (BAY IKTI).
He was active in domestic and international public life. He held positions in more than 10 renowned professional organizations, such as the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Hungarian Society of Information and Communications Technology (HTE), the Hungarian Federation of Technical and Natural Science Associations (MTESZ), and the World Trade Center (WTC).
He is the author of 36 books and book chapters and nearly 200 scientific articles.
He has received 33 awards and distinctions for his professional and public activities. The most important ones are: Tivadar Puskás Award (HTE, 1983, 2000); Kempelen Farkas Award (HTE, 1991); Dénes Gábor Award (Novofer Foundation, 1994); Academic Award (MTA, 1999); Széchenyi Award (2000); József Nádor Memorial Medal (BME, 2007); Middle Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2010).
