Tamas Gorbe
Between 1968 and 1974, as a research associate at the Electronics Department of the Central Physical Research Institute (KFKI), he participated in the development of the basic software for the Institute's TPA-1001/TPAi computer. Together with his colleagues, they created a disk operating system (with 32k disks), an interpreted Basic-type language (Focal) and a Cobol compiler (Minibol).
From 1974 to 1976, he participated in the organization of a new R20 computer center as a programming and software group leader at the Social Security (TB) Directorate General of the National Council of Trade Unions (SZOT).
From 1976 to 1989, he worked in the software development department of the Computer Applications Research Institute (Számki) (later Computer Applications Company, Számalk).
From 1976 to 1978, he was responsible for coordinating the R10 sample systems funded by the National Technical Development Board (OMFB), supervising the systems located in 26 different locations, and supporting the installed application systems (e.g. healthcare, production management, single crystal growth system at KFKI).
From 1978, he dealt with computer-aided workshop-level production management. The DIMACS system was developed for VIDEOTON in Székesfehérvár, while its improved version was used in the IKARUS factory, also in Székesfehérvár. Production was supported in eight workshops of two plant units with the twenty outsourced terminals. (The system was still operating ten years after its handover.)
In 1984, the Interministerial Committee on Computer Science and the Hungarian Central Statistical Office awarded the creators of DIMACS (Academic Gazette, see below).
From 1989, he participated in software export work in Germany and Switzerland for six years. These were short projects, maximum one year. They created a COBOL program generator for querying an information system (for AS400 machines), a material management system in Progress, and a healthcare, financial, and fixed asset accounting system for a wide variety of computers.
From 1994, he worked for 15 years in the software house of Erste Bank in Vienna. (Erste Bank had the largest computer in Austria with 10-20,000 terminals.) They worked with Adabas/Natural and DB2/Cobol systems; they created real-time account management banking software. His task was to create system plans, program them and perform product management tasks.
He retired in 2010 and moved back home. Together with his wife, Éva Viszt, they created risk assessment and analysis, as well as business impact analysis programs for a rural IT security auditing company.
MINIBOL is described on pages 56 and 80 of the study "The TPA Story ".
