Erno Farkas
He worked primarily in programming language and living language technology at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer Science and Automation Research Institute (MTA SZTAKI), and then as an employee of MorphoLogic Ltd. With excellent theoretical knowledge and practical sense, he participated in the domestic implementation of several compiler programs. The first disassembler, general-purpose macroprocessor, FORTRAN compiler, Lisp and BASIC interpreter, and Ada implementation are associated with his name in Hungary.
He is the co-author of the first Hungarian computer-aided dictionary, and the main dreamer of an order-independent dependency grammar for the Hungarian language, the model of which he also implemented. (A generally applicable Hungarian sentence parser was created based on this idea.)
His articles have been published in Hungarian and international journals. For a while, he was one of the editors of the journal Computational Linguistics and Computer Languages.
In 1976, he received the Gyula Farkas Memorial Award.
- He was a great popularizer of computer technology. His articles ranged from the mysteries of translation to the relationship between natural language and machines to machine poetry.
- He was an excellent amateur artist. His reliefs and sculptures reflect his individual vision.
