Akos Detrekői
His place of work was the University of Civil Engineering and Transport Technology (and its successor, the Budapest University of Technology - BME). In 1977, he was appointed head of the Department of Photogrammetry, and in 1980, he became a university professor at BME. From 1977 to 2004, he was the head of the Department of Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics at BME. Between 1986 and 1990, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. He was the Rector of BME between 1997 and 2004.
President of the Hungarian Rectors' Conference in 2003-2004. In 2009 he was awarded the title of Rector Emeritus.
His main research areas are geodetic and photogrammetric measurements and geoinformatics. He is credited with developing a mathematical model for deformation measurements.
He received his PhD in Technical Sciences in 1971 and his PhD in Technical Sciences in 1978. He was elected a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1990 and a full member in 1995.
Between 1976 and 1986, he was the Secretary General of the Geodesy and Cartography Association, between 1990 and 1993, he was the Vice President of the Hungarian Society of Surveying, Remote Sensing and Cartography – the latter's President in 1994. In addition, he was the President of the Hungarian Humboldt Association between 1993 and 1997, and its Honorary President since 1997. He is the founder and first President of the Hungarian Geospatial Information Foundation (HUNAGI). He is the President of the Hungarian National Committee of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). From 2004 to 2010, he was the President of the National Council for Information and Communications Technology (NHIT). Since 2006, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Central European University (CEU).
He is the author or co-author of more than one hundred and seventy scientific publications, four of which were published in book form and nine in book chapters. His works are primarily published in Hungarian, German and English.
His awards: MTESZ Award (1982); Antal Fasching Memorial Medal (1988); FIG Memorial Medal Bronze Grade (International Federation of Surveyors, 1990); Lázár Deák Memorial Medal (1993); Albert Szent-Györgyi Award (Minister of Education, 1996); Humboldt Memorial Medal (Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic, 1996); Péter Pázmány Award (2000); First Class German Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz Ordnung, 2002); László Kozma Memorial Medal (BME VIK, 2003); Middle Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2003); Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland (Commandeur de l'Ordre du Lion de Finlande, 2004); Széchenyi Prize (2006).
