János Demetrovics
From 1973 he was a scientific associate and then a senior fellow at the Computer Science and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA SZTAKI). In the meantime, he was a post-graduate student in Moscow until 1973. In 1976 he was the head of the Department and Research Laboratory of Informatics at SZTAKI, and then a scientific advisor.
In addition to his position at a research institute, he taught at universities. Between 1976 and 1981, he was an associate professor at the Mathematics Institute of the Kossuth Lajos University of Debrecen (KLTE). Since 1981, he has been a professor at the Department of General Computer Science of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of ELTE. In 1995, he was the head of the Department of Information Science, which was transferred to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA SZTAKI). He also teaches at the Department of Information Systems of the Faculty of Informatics of ELTE and at the Károly Róbert College in Gyöngyös.
He defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of mathematical sciences in Moscow in 1974 and his thesis for the degree of academic doctor in Budapest in 1981. He is a member of the Mathematics Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Informatics and Computer Science Committee, and was the chairman of the latter for several years. He has been a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1987, and a full member since 1995. He has been an honorary doctor of the Vietnamese Academy of Sciences since 2010.
His main research areas are databases, relational data models, algorithm theory and multivalued logics. He is a significant figure in the further development of computer science and information theory in Hungary. He is the author or co-author of more than one hundred and eighty scientific publications; ten of them are books or book chapters.
Since 1995, he has been a member of the Council of Academic Research Sites, the Presidential Committee of Our Mother Tongue in Europe, and the Library Committee. He is also a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals.
His awards: Géza Grünwald Prize (Bolyai János Mathematical Society, BJMT, 1973); Ottó Benedikt Prize (SZTAKI, 1982); Academic Prize (shared, MTA, 1984); Gold Degree of the Order of Merit for Labor (1987); Kalmár Prize (NJSZT, 1990); Széchenyi Prize (shared, 2005); Nívó Prize (Academic Publishing House, 2005); Middle Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2010).
