György Csepeli
From 1972, he was a lecturer in social psychology at the Institute of Sociology of ELTE, and later at the Faculty of Social Sciences (TáTK); since 1990, he has also been teaching at the University of Miskolc (ME).
He is the founder of the college and university level education of social psychology in Hungary.
At the TáTK, he headed the Department of Social Psychology, then after 2002 the Department of Cultural Anthropology, and in 2010-2011 the Department of Sociology. Since 2010, he has been the head of the Interdisciplinary Social Research Program of the Doctoral School of Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences, ELTE. – Professor emeritus of ELTE and ME.
Between 1989 and 2012, he was a visiting professor at American universities; he also taught as a visiting professor at European universities on several occasions.
Since the late 1990s, his interest has turned towards the information society. Between 1999 and 2002, he was the founder and operator of the MATÁV Business Intelligence Unit. Between 2002 and 2010, he dealt with public policy issues of the domestic information society.
He researches the social and socio-psychological effects caused by the emergence of the Internet, both on the individual and the public sphere, as well as on the operations of various institutional, business and service organizations.
Winner and participant of numerous domestic and European research projects.
Between 2003 and 2010, he was a member of the council of the National Research and Technology Office (NKTH). He was the president of the Hungarian Sociological Society several times (most recently between 2010 and 2015). Since 2019, he has been the vice president of the World Complexity Science Academy (WCSA), and since 2020, he has been the editor of its journal.
Between 2002 and 2006, he was a political state secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communications (IHM), between 2006 and 2008, he was a public policy director at the Ministry of Economy and Transport, and between 2008 and 2010, he worked in the Office of the Prime Minister.
He was also a member of the board of directors of Magyar Posta Zrt.
He is one of the authors of the study volume Hungarian Octopus (2013, 2014, 2015) - which was originally published in Mozgó Világ. His work on the economic and social impacts of artificial intelligence was published in 2020.
He also carried out significant educational activities. Between 1971 and 1980, he worked as a second-year employee in the Public Education Department of Hungarian Television; he was the last presenter of the later discontinued Tudósklub program. He received a Nívó Prize for the television series Mindennapok Sóciálpszichológiája.
In 1980, as a young sociologist, he received the Ferenc Erdei Award from the Hungarian Sociological Society.
