    Between 1964 and 1970, he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities of ELTE, where he obtained his doctorate in 1970. In 1969, he obtained an international diploma (Diplôme d'études supérieures européennes) in Nancy (France) at the Central European University.

    Between 1971 and 1981, he worked at the Institute of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party; then between 1981 and 1985, he was an employee of the Computer Education Center (Számok).

    Between 1989 and 2009, he taught at the Faculty of Social Sciences of ELTE, during which he founded and headed the Education and Youth Research Center until 2015. In 1991, he defended his PhD thesis in sociology at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. After his retirement in 2009, he taught as an associate professor at the Wesley János Theological Seminary (WJLF).

    His research area was the sociology of education. The sociology of political socialization and vocational training. In the 1970s and 1990s, he dealt with the sociology of vocational training; between 1984 and 1998, he researched teachers' attitudes towards IT, and from 1990 onwards, primarily the political socialization of adolescents.

    Founding and board member of the Hungarian Sociological Association (MSZT); in 2000, he was its president and twice its vice-president. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Sociology Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; between 2002 and 2014, he was a member of the Labor Science Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Between 2001 and 2003, he was the chairman of the Sociology jury of the National Scientific Research Fund Programs (OTKA). He was a member of the International Sociological Association, the European Sociological Association, the Centre de coordination pour la Recherche et l'Enseignement en Informatique et Société, the NJSZT, and the board of trustees of the Rézler Gyula Foundation. Member of the editorial board of the journal Educatio, chairman of the editorial board.
