Mátyás Arató
He began his university studies in 1949 at the József Attila University (JATE) in the Department of Physics and Graphical Geometry, and then completed his studies at the ELTE Department of Applied Mathematics in 1951. His first job was at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Applied Mathematics Research Institute.
Between 1958 and 1962 he was a post-graduate student of AN Kolmogorov at Moscow State University. From 1962 he was a candidate of mathematical sciences, from 1971 he was a doctor of mathematical sciences (MTA). Since 1971 he has been a university professor. Between 1981 and 1982 he was a visiting professor at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles).
Between 1953 and 1958 he was the head of the Probability Computation Department of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Applied Mathematics Research Institute, between 1962 and 1965 he was the head of the Cryptography Department of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, between 1966 and 1976 he was the head of the Statistics Department of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer Center, and after the merger he was the deputy director of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI). From 1976 to 1986 he was the director/education director of the Computer Applications Research Institute (Számki) and then of the Computer Applications Company (Számalk).
Between 1971-1984 he was a part-time university professor at ELTE, between 1984-1986 at Kossuth Lajos University of Debrecen (KLTE); between 1986-2001 he was a full-time university professor at the University of Debrecen (DE). His managerial duties in order: Director of the Computing Center, Head of the Department of Information Technology, Head of the Department of Probability Computation, Deputy Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. Since 2001 he has been Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Informatics (IK) of the University of Debrecen.
He was a representative of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) in the General Assembly from 1994 to 2000. He is the founder, member and former chairman of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer Science Committee. He was a member of the editorial boards of the journals Alkalmazott Matematikai Lapok, Analysis Mathematica, Computers and Mathematics with Applications, and Performance Evaluation.
His research interests include time series analysis, statistics of stochastic processes, and the efficiency analysis and organization of computer systems. He has published 259 scientific and academic publications.
His awards include: Academic Award (1973), Széchenyi Award (1994), Eötvös József Wreath (MTA, 2001), Medal of the Faculty of Informatics (DE, 2005); Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2006), Honorary Doctorate of ELTE (2007).
