Bálint Antal
From 2009, he was a software developer at Kripto Research and Development Ltd.
Since 2012, he has been an assistant professor and then an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Graphics and Image Processing at the University of Debrecen (DE).
In 2013, he received the Ányos Jedlik predoctoral and Zoltán Magyary postdoctoral scholarships from the National Excellence Program. Between October 2013 and October 2015, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge.
He has been involved in the Debrecen Image Processing Group since 2007, since he was a student. Under the supervision of Dr. András Hajdu, he conducted a significant part of his research in the field of medical image processing, especially the processing of digital retinal images and cell recordings. In the meantime, he also participated in the development of an image processing-based automatic screening system for detecting diabetic eye complications. The system he developed, which detects microaneurysms appearing on the retina, has been in first place in the "Retinopathy Online Challenge" competition since 2010.
His research interests include machine learning and image processing, with a particular focus on their applications to medical and biological problems. His publications have received 264 independent citations (as of 2016).
He is a reviewer and program committee member of several international journals and conferences. He has been a member of the Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 2009; he is also a member of the Scientific Committee on Informatics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; and since 2010 of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
For his work, he was awarded the title of Outstanding Student of the Faculty of Informatics of the University of Debrecen; the Publication Award of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Debrecen (2012); the DAB Award established by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to recognize the work of early-career researchers (2012); and the János Kemény Award of the Hungarian National Academy of Sciences (2013).
