He was a fighter pilot in the 1950s, with the rank of first lieutenant.
From 1957, he participated in the construction of the M-3 computer as an engineer at the Cybernetics Research Group (KKCS) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
In the 1970s, he worked as an engineer at IBM Hungary.
Later, he was the head of the Applications Department of the Computer Applications Company (Accounting).
In 1973, the State Administration System Development Office was established under the leadership of Géza Nyíry, whose work was assisted by István Ábrahám as an advisor.
Until 1989, he was the deputy director of ICL Hungary.
