Its activities cover the areas of electricity generation, transmission, system control and electricity trading. Its main objective is to ensure the supply of electricity to the country's residents.

History of the institution : On September 1, 1963, the Hungarian Electricity Works (MVM) was founded, which organizationally included companies engaged in the production (power plants) and distribution (electricity suppliers) of electricity, as well as the maintenance, investment, installation and construction companies belonging to them. From January 1, 1968, its name became the Hungarian Electricity Works Trust (MVMT). Only supervision and management of long-term development activities remained in the specialized ministry. The complete reorganization took time, so the transition from the previous, direct state management to trust management essentially and practically only became general from 1966. The French national electricity company (EdF) was the model for the formation of the MVMT organization, which was considered the most modern organization in Europe at the time. MVMT performed the technical and economic management of the entire Hungarian electricity system and operated in this form until the end of 1991. In 1992, the industry was transformed into a two-tier system of joint-stock companies, the first tier of which was the Hungarian Electricity Company (MVM), which played both the ownership and management role, and the second tier was the power plant and electricity supply companies, as well as the basic grid company.

The history of IT: In the 1960s, the Management Organization and Mechanization Department (ÜGF) performed IT tasks for the company as a separate unit in the form of a trust. In the 1970s, a Computer Center was established, which provided services to all its departments and power suppliers, and operated in this form until 1993. Later, it was transformed into a plant, and then operated as a chief IT engineer from 1996. As a result of the change of regime, several companies became independent, as a result of which the IT center became increasingly smaller. In 2005, MVMI Informatika Zrt. was established, and since 2006 they have been performing IT management centrally, including office, economic and general IT.

In 1972, the first IBM 360 computer was purchased, which was used as a so-called Main Frame, a central processing unit. This was the second such device in the country. In 1979, it was replaced by an IBM 370 machine, and then in 1990, an IBM 9000 (9221) machine was used. From 1987, IBM PC XTs were in use. The first computer network was established in 1990, the purpose of which was to record data in electronic form. In these years, mainframes appeared, at which time a pair of Dec Alpha computers were used. In 2003, the IBM 9221 machine was finally withdrawn and since then there have been no so-called mainframes and mainframe devices, only Windows and Linux computers and server parks, which are used for central processing.

The Computer Center was led by Károly Csébfalvi from 1970, and then from 1984-85, László Tasi held the leading role. About 65 people participated in the operation of the central unit at that time. About 30 people worked in an operating role. About 25 people performed development, organization and programming tasks. About 10 people were responsible for overall management tasks and about the same number of people performed administrative work.
