The Hungarian Society of Scientists was founded in 1830

In 1840, the name of the Hungarian Society of Scientists was changed to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Taking over research institutes from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences: The Eötvös Loránd Research Network, or ELKH for short, is a research institute network in Hungary that was officially established on August 1, 2019, and began operating on September 1. Its governing body, the ELKH Secretariat, is responsible for maintaining, managing and operating the research institutes and research sites that were previously part of the organizational framework of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In addition to the president, the governing body has six members delegated by the minister responsible for the coordination of science policy, and six members delegated by the president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Miklós Maróth, a classical philologist and a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, was appointed as the first president of the governing body. The establishment of the research institute network and the secretariat and the conditions for their operation are determined by Act LXVIII of 2019.

    Interesting facts

The Academy played a fundamental role in the development of Hungarian computer science. In 1956, it established the Cybernetics Research Group. Within its framework, the M-3, Hungary's first electronic, digital computer, began operating in 1960. In 1960, the Presidency Cybernetics Committee was established at the Academy of Sciences (Chairman L. Kalmár, Tamás Frey, later János Szelezsán, Secretary). In 1968, the government established the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Computer Science, where the operational work was carried out by representatives of the ministries on behalf of the Academy. Lajos Bálint was the head of the MTA Computer Science Application Committee. The Academy of Sciences assisted the development of Hungarian computer science by organizing numerous conferences of national importance.
