    • When it was founded, within the framework of direct planned economic management, its task was to organize, manage and control the production work of smelting and mechanical engineering companies. As a nationally competent, "supreme" professional administrative body, it had the following professional administrative branches:
    1. ferrous metallurgy,
    2. machine tool industry,
    3. agricultural machinery industry,
    4. general mechanical engineering,
    5. automotive industry,
    6. automotive and tractor industry,
    7. hajóipar
    8. power equipment industry,
    9. telecommunications industry,
    10. instrument industry,
    11. mass-produced goods industry.
    • In the direct command system, the ministry's organization was divided into 8 principal departments, 3 independent departments, and 13 industry directorates. The Metallurgical Sales Company had a legal status similar to the departments, while the Institute of Industrial Economics and Plant Management and the Mechanical Engineering Office had the status of independent departments.
    • In 1958, he began to establish larger corporate production units. Several companies were placed under the direct supervision of deputy ministers.
    • During the New Economic Mechanism (1968), its responsibilities changed.
    • He founded several companies related to computer technology and organization within his sphere of influence, such as KGM GAV, KGM ISZSZI, KGM MTTI, and the computer center of the Ferrous Metallurgy Directorate within the ministry.

    It was established in 1950 as one of the ministries created by the division of the then Ministry of Heavy Industry into three ministries. Its responsibilities have changed several times due to frequent ministerial reorganizations.
    In 1980, it merged with the then-formed Ministry of Industry.

    The ministry basically included many telecommunications and instrument industry companies within sectors 9 and 10, such as the leading companies in the early development of computer technology, such as EMG, Videoton, Orion, FMV, BEAG, BRG.
