Its first product, the Compaq Portable, was a portable IBM PC-compatible personal computer. It was released in March 1983 for $2,995 (a precursor to the laptop) and sold 53,000 units in its first year. In 1985, Compaq released the Compaq Deskpro 286, its 16-bit desktop computer. This machine featured a 6 MHz Intel 80286 microprocessor and 7 MB of RAM (the model with a 40 MB hard drive cost $2,000). In 1986, after sales had exceeded half a billion dollars, Compaq released the Compaq Portable II. The Portable II was smaller and lighter than its predecessor, and featured a revised external 8 MHz processor and a 10 MB hard drive. It was cheaper than the IBM PC/AT, costing $3,199, or $4,799 with a hard drive. In 1987, a year later, Compaq introduced the first computers based on the Intel 80386 microprocessor, the Compaq Portable 386 and the Compaq Portalbe III.
