Katalin Tarnay
He worked at the Central Physical Research Institute (KFKI) for 36 years. He worked on nuclear measurements and data transmission network protocols. As a visiting researcher, he worked on gamma spectroscopy measurements at the Obninsk and Dubna nuclear research institutes, then on computer network modeling at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and on financial testing procedures at SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication), within the framework of KFKI. He earned a candidate's and academic doctorate degrees for his research results.
After the closure of the KFKI Measurement and Computing Research Institute (MSZKI), he was a laboratory manager at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI), and then a testing strategic consultant at NOKIA Hungary Kft. until 2003.
In parallel with his research and work, he has been involved in university education since 1980, initially teaching as a university professor at the Budapest University of Technology (BME), then at the University of Veszprém (VE). He also taught for a semester at the University of Montreal, gave a series of lectures at Tsinghua University in Beijing and at the Bangalore University of Technology in India. He organized research groups at Hungarian universities and was a PhD supervisor; 10 of his students successfully obtained their degrees. Since 1992, he has been an honorary university professor at the BME; since 2003, he has been a professor emeritus at the VE (and its successor, the Pannonian University (PE)).
Between 1985 and 1989, he was the Deputy Secretary General of the Hungarian National Union of Workers' Party (NJSZT).
During his career, he was a member of the editorial boards of the journals Híradástechnika, Elsevier Computer Standards and Interfaces, and Reseuaux et Informatique Repartie. He participated as an organizer and speaker in domestic and international conferences. He reviewed and published conference proceedings and other professional books. His book was published in the United States in 2011 and 2013, of which he was both the author and editor.
Honors: Public Culture Award (1981); Kalmár Award (NJSZT, 1983); Lónyai Award (MTA, 1993); Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2003); Faculty Award (IBM, 2005).
