Laszlo Szirmay-Kalos

After graduating from university, he started working at the Department of Control Engineering and Informatics (IIT, formerly the Department of Process Control) of the Budapest University of Technology (BME). He received his PhD in 1992 and his PhD in 2001 from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He is the head of the computer graphics group. He has successfully graduated nine of his doctoral students and was co-supervisor for four others.

His research interests include computer graphics and its frontiers, such as algorithmic photography and medical imaging. He has achieved many achievements in the field of Monte Carlo simulation, where he developed efficient sampling and integration methods for photon transport, which are used in image synthesis and PET reconstruction systems around the world.

He has spent extended periods of time at foreign companies and research institutes, such as Ricoh (Japan), Technische Universität Wien (Austria), Unversidad de Girona (Spain), University of Minnesota (USA), Aalto University (Finland). He has also worked for the computer graphics research institutes of Intel and Hewlett-Packard.

He was a member of the editorial boards of the Computer Graphics Forum and Computers & Graphics; later he was editor-in-chief of Periodica Polytechnica.

He is a co-founder of the Grafgeo department of the National Institute of Geosciences and Geophysics, of which he has been a board member since 2001.
