Agnes Szigeti

Date of birth:
1946.
Place of birth:
Budapest
Education, professional qualification:
  • Electrical Engineer - BME - 1970.
  • mathematician - ELTE - 1976.

  • As a junior engineer, he participated in the creation of the ORION factory's computer center, and then for 7 years he participated in the development of punched tape-controlled program packages that assisted production on the TPA 1001 machine.

From 1977, he managed software development work as a team leader at the Computer Center of the Ministry of Finance (PM SZK). He created the OS-COS hybrid operating system for the TPA 1001 machine to enable developments within the otherwise closed COS (e.g., the integration of magnetic tape units for system backup purposes).

During the 10 years he spent at the Central Physics Research Institute (FKI) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 1980 and 1990, he participated in the development of the administrative software of the TPA 11 machine: first in the integration of the DIBOL language into the RSX operating system, then in the adaptation and further development of the transaction and database management system TRACCS-11. TRACCS-11 provided KFKI-MSZKI with a huge business advantage: more than 40 systems based on it were installed nationwide. Since these were large systems, safe operation became an increasingly important requirement, and this is when DUAL-TRACCS was developed. The best-known application of the two-machine system, capable of automatically, on-line, and immediately taking over each other's work in the event of the other's failure, was the development of the on-line cash register system of the DOMUS Department Store.

After the 1990 regime change, he worked in the insurance industry for 15 years. First, he was the IT Director of Europe Insurance, then of its successor Groupama Insurance, and for the last three years he was the Deputy CEO. He built a fully integrated, reliable, easy-to-use, secure system. He was keen to ensure that the VMS operating system ran under the application system on VAX and ALPHA hardware.

Even after retirement, he continues to actively participate in various projects as a consultant and developer.

He was an active member of DECUS (Digital Equipment Computer Users' Society), then DECUS Hungary, and was also the president of the organization for several years.
