Tibor Szekely
Between 1976 and 1991, he worked as a senior research fellow at the Hardware-ITC computer research institute in Cluj-Napoca, where he led the development of the first IBM PC compatible computer in Romania. His research area included the development of computer controls for various types of machine tools.
A successful entrepreneur since 1991. Together with his wife and family, he owns the Mendola trading group in Cluj-Napoca.
In 1990, together with some fellow engineers, he founded the Transylvanian Hungarian Technical and Scientific Society (EMT), based in Cluj-Napoca, an organization of professionals working in the technical and natural sciences, greatly contributing to the technical and scientific development of Hungarian-speaking professionals in Romania.
Between 1990 and 1996, he was the chairman of the Computer Science Department of EMT. During this time, the SzámOkt (Computer Science and Education Conference) was launched, which remains one of the main events of EMT to this day.
In 1990, he initiated the cooperation between the Computer Engineering Department of EMT and the National Institute of Public Administration.
Since 1991, he has organized the participation of Hungarian-speaking high school students in the Nemes Tihamér Informatics Study Competition, as well as numerous other IT competitions and camps also for high school students.
He is the co-author of the two-volume Elektrotechnikai Kislexikon (Kriterion Publishing House, Bucharest, 1994).
His awards include: Zoltán Bay Award (World Federation of Hungarian Engineers and Architects, 1995); Neumann Plaque (János Neumann Computer Science Society (NJSZT), 2004); Imre Mikó Excellence Award (Transylvanian Hungarian Public Cultural Association (EMKE), 2010); Kincses Kolozsvárért Award (Kincses Kolozsvár Association, 2019).
