György Surján
From 1983, he worked as an otolaryngologist at the Otolaryngology Clinic of the University of Continuing Medical Education (OTE), later at the Haynal Imre University of Health Sciences (HIETE).
He has been involved in medical and healthcare informatics issues since the 1990s. His main areas of interest are computer-based medical knowledge representation, medical coding systems, ontologies, and analysis of healthcare databases.
He has worked as a college and university lecturer in several higher education institutions on a contractual or part-time basis since 1992. He was the head of the Data Service Department of HIETE on a part-time basis between 1992-1997 and on a full-time basis between 1997-2000. He taught at the Department of Healthcare Administration of the Nyíregyháza College of Health Sciences of the Debrecen Medical University (DOTE), at the Department of Technical Informatics of the predecessor institution of Széchenyi István University (SZE) in Győr, and at the University of Chemical Industry of Veszprém (VVE). He has been regularly teaching at the Semmelweis Medical University (SOTE) since 1997; he is a part-time assistant professor at the Institute of Digital Health Sciences of Semmelweis University (the successor institution).
Between 2000 and 2002, he was the Deputy Director General for Information Technology of the National Blood Service, from 2002 he was the Head of Information Technology of the Strategic Research Institute for Healthcare (ESKI), and then the Acting Director General in 2010-2011. From 2011 to 2015, he headed the Directorate General for Information Technology and Systems Analysis of the Institute for Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Quality and Organizational Development (GYEMSZI). Later, as a professional advisor to the State Health Care Center (ÁEEK), he assists the work of the Deputy State Secretariat for Professional Management of Healthcare at the Ministry of Human Resources (EMMI).
He is active in the management of several domestic and international scientific associations. Since 1983, he has been a member of the Hungarian Association of Otolaryngologists, while since 1990, he has been a member of the board of the Hungarian Society of Health Informatics. Between 1992 and 1997, he was a member of the Code Maintenance Committee of the Ministry of Welfare. Since 1997, he has been the head of the Medical Informatics Working Group of the Hungarian Standards Body, Medical Technology Technical Committee. Since 1998, he has been a member of the European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI) Associations Council, since 2009, Board Member / Publication officer. Member of the Medical Informatics Working Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Since 2008, he has been the secretary of the Biomedical Department of the Hungarian Society of Health Sciences, then its president for four years from 2011, and its vice president from 2014; he was re-elected as president in 2019.
The civilian division of the Hungarian Golden Cross of Merit was awarded by the President of the Republic in 2024.
