Balázs Martos
Initially, he was the head of the research group developing multiprocessor systems and computer network equipment at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer Science and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI). He was the chief designer of the IBM 3705 compatible remote data processing processor that was put into production at the Telephone Factory.
From 1990, as the head of the academic computing center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) SZTAKI and as a member of the Technical Council of the National Infrastructure Development Program (NIIF), he managed several developments that led to the establishment of the first Hungarian national academic internet network (HBONE). Until 2000, he actively led the development and operation of several other central services of HBONE and NIIF. He participated in the Eureka project called EUROCAIRN, which prepared the TEN-34 project, and as a member of the Advisory Board of the W3C consortium, he participated in the development and standardization of the WWW protocol. He dealt with internet security problems, and in this regard he established the organization coordinating security incidents in Hungary, HunCERT (Hungarian Computer Emergency Response Team).
He was a pioneer in the creation and development of the Hungarian Internet. He played a key role in the development and operation of the domestic top-level Internet domain name system (DNS), and from 1990 until his retirement in 2015, he ensured the independence and stability of the .hu domain as the chief administrative officer. He initiated the establishment of the Hungarian Internet exchange center (Budapest Internet eXchange), an independent service that exchanges traffic between Internet service providers, and was also the responsible manager for its development and operation.
He is one of the founders of the Internet Service Providers Council (ISZT), an association of Hungarian internet service providers. Until his retirement in 2015, he managed the successful development of ISZT as an association and the reliable, competitively neutral operation of ISZT's nationally significant services.
On his initiative, ISZT provided significant financial support for the development of the Hungarian Electronic Library (MEK) and the NJSZT Informatics History Exhibition in Szeged.
Professional positions held during various periods of his career: head of the Internet Service Providers Council (1997-2015), then honorary chairman; member of the NIIF Council and head of the NIIF HBONE project (1990-2000); member of the Hungarnet presidency; chairman of the NIIF Ethics Committee; member of the Networkshop Program Committee; director of the Hungarian Internet Society; vice-chairman of the Informatics Interest Reconciliation Forum (INFORUM); member of the Internet Society and W3C Advisory Board; member of the Scientific Engineering Qualification Committee.
