András Márkus
During his career, he was a scientific fellow (1975–1977), scientific associate (1977–1990), senior scientific associate (1990–2001), and finally scientific advisor (from 2001) at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer Science and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI).
From 1985 he taught at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Budapest University of Technology (BME); he received his doctorate there in 1986. From 1994 he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, Veszprém University of Chemical Industry (VVE). He was one of the supervisors of the ELTE–MTA–SZTAKI Doctoral School. In 2000 he won the Széchenyi Professorial Scholarship.
From 2001 he was a private university teacher at BME, and in September 2004 he was appointed as a university professor at Corvinus University of Budapest (BCE).
He dealt with the border areas of mechanical engineering and applied computer science, with the technical applications of logic programming, and primarily examined highly complex tasks using artificial intelligence methods. He achieved fundamentally new results in the field of engineering applications of genetic algorithms; he developed a technological sequence planning system based on the application of these algorithms. He was the first in Hungary to examine the problems of so-called holonic manufacturing systems, and was the first to develop a model and negotiation protocol based on them. His activities related to product model standardization were also significant.
He received his Candidate of Technical Sciences degree in 1990 and his Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences degree in 2001.
He was a member of the Design Theory Subcommittee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Mechanical Engineering Committee and a corresponding member of the Conferences and Events / International Institution for Production Engineering Research (CIRP) (since 1997).
The Hungarian National Academy of Sciences recognized his work with the Kalmár Award in 1977 and 2003.
