Tamás Lipták
After graduating from university, he worked at the Mathematical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, under the supervision of Alfréd Rényi, on game theory and probability, but he was also interested in economic planning. Rényi introduced him to economist János Kornai, with whom they jointly developed the economic and mathematical model known today as the Kornai-Lipták model, for the interaction of forces operating in centrally planned economies.
He also had his own independent achievements. His article "Two-level planning" (1965), published in the leading journal of the field, Econometrica, in English, received over 200 citations and was selected as one of the twenty best articles published in Econometrica between 1933 and 1970. - However, after the events of 1956, his career was cut short.
- After graduating, he was admitted to the Eötvös Dormitory, from which he was expelled in 1949 for alleged political reasons.
- After the suppression of the 1956 revolution, he participated in the production of illegal pamphlets, for which he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in 1959, which greatly affected him mentally. He was not allowed to continue his scientific career after that. He first received a passport in 1981. He accepted a scholarship to Cambridge, but was no longer able to continue his mathematical research at the same level.
