Attila Kovács
Initially, he worked as an IT specialist at the Computer Education Center (Számok), then at the National Computer Science Office (OSZI) of the Central Statistical Office (KSH).
He began his career as a journalist in these companies. He started at the monthly magazine Számítástechnika - which was originally published by KSH, Számok and then Számítástechnika Aklaksási Vállalat (Számalk); then in the mid-1980s, he and the magazine were transferred to the first American-Hungarian joint venture on the publishing front, Computerword Informatika Kft. (this was the predecessor of the later Hungarian International Data Group (IDG).
In 1991, he wanted to continue his experience in the newsletter genre in an independent business: together with his colleagues, he founded Prím Kft. (the cradle of the later Prím Online). He also edited and published the OpenX newsletter, which was considered a pioneer in its time, dealing with open systems, and TávLap, which covered the world of telecommunications. However, these newsletters could not sustain a publisher, so he sold his share in the company during subsequent mergers.
However, IT journalism and especially news production accompanied him for the rest of his life. First, he continued to edit newsletters, then became a senior staff member of the weekly Monitor; and from 1996, he was the chief editor and journalist of the Prím Online news portal.
He became famous as an IT journalist; he is considered one of the most significant correspondents of the first half century of Hungarian IT.
- Two-time world fencing champion.
- In 2011, the NJSZT, the Association of Information Technology, Telecommunications and Electronics Enterprises (IVSZ) and the Information Technology for Society Association (Infotér) established the "Information Technology Journalist of the Year" award in his memory (also known as the "Attila Kovács Award").
