Attila Elemér Kiss
He has been a lecturer and researcher at ELTE continuously since 1985. Between 1985 and 1992 he worked as a program designer at the Information Systems Science Department of the ELTE Computer Center. Teaching mathematical subjects.
In 1991, he defended his PhD thesis entitled “Investigating Dependencies in Relational Databases”. Between 1993 and 2002, he was an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science, from 2002, an associate professor at the Department of Information Systems, and from 2010, the head of the department.
In 2010, he received his habilitation in computer science at ELTE, and continued his work there as the head of the Department of Information Systems. He is the head of the Information Systems specialization of the master's program in computer science. He is the developer and instructor of several new subjects, including Data Warehouses and Data Mining, Theoretical Foundations of Databases, Modern Databases, and Research Methodology.
In 2011, he established the Knowledge Management Systems Research Workshop within the Department, where he works with students on modern research and development tasks and the preparation of scientific publications.
Between 2017 and 2021, he founded the Information Systems Research Workshop in a talent development grant, and during this time (with the involvement of students) he produced nearly forty publications on topics such as image processing, artificial intelligence, deep learning, bioinformatics, and semantic web. As of 2020, six of his PhD students and one university doctoral student had defended their dissertations.
In addition, he also taught at other universities and took part in several industrial IT research and development projects; he also worked as an actuary.
From the very beginning (1985-1992), he participated in the development of the information system of the Danube Iron Works and in the design of optimization algorithms for the Ikarus factory.
Between 1986 and 1991, he worked as a computer science instructor at KOPINT-DATORG Education Ltd., promoting and demonstrating the use of computers in courses held for industry players.
Between 1992 and 2004, he worked as a leading actuarial mathematician at Atlasz Insurance, and as a leading IT specialist there until 1999. His work included, among other things, the mathematical modeling of insurance reserves and the creation of IT support for this, as well as the introduction of modern IT systems, such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR), at the company.
In 1995, he taught a Databases course as a visiting professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln (NE, USA) under the Hungarian State Eötvös Scholarship.
In 2000, he worked as a systems analyst at Expressz Magyarország Ltd., applying data mining methods.
In 2008, during a creative sabbatical, he worked in data mining research at the Informatics Research Laboratory of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer Science and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI).
In 2014, he was a visiting researcher at several universities in Vietnam, and in 2015, at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN, USA.
Since 2015, he has also been teaching mathematics and computer science at the Selye János University in Komárno.
His research areas include: mathematical, algorithmic and application issues of databases (logical design of databases, optimization of data processing, database security), as well as the use of mathematical models in data mining and artificial intelligence.
Organizational memberships: Bolyai János Mathematical Society (BJMT, since 1990); NJSZT (1988–2000); Hungarian Society of Actuaries (qualified membership, 1993–2012); Association of Hungarian Insurers (MABISZ) Informatics Section (1993–1996), and Leading Actuary Section (2002–2004).
Honors: Gyula Farkas Award (BJMT, 1990); Outstanding Researcher of the Faculty (ELTE IK, 2007); 2nd place as Informatics Instructor of the Year (Hungarian Association of Leading Informatics Scientists, VISZ, 2012 and 2013); Faculty Scientific Award (ELTE IK, 2015).
