László Hunyadvári
After graduating from university, he worked as an intern at the Department of Numerical and Machine Mathematics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (TTK) of ELTE. From 1974, he joined the training of programmers and then program designers in mathematics, teaching the subjects Data Structures and Assemblers and Compilers. He taught the subject Algorithms and Data Structures for more than 20 years - later also to applied mathematics students. He taught Formal Languages for almost 40 years. He wrote several notes for both subjects.
After spending years at Leningrad University between 1973 and 1974, he obtained his doctorate from ELTE in 1974 and his candidate degree from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1981. He has been an associate professor at ELTE since 1982. Since 2018, he has continued his teaching activities even after retirement.
Between 1991 and 1996, he was a member of the Faculty Council and Budget Committee of the ELTE TTK, between 1997 and 2000, he was a member of the Study Committee, and between 1999 and 2003, he was the Vice-Rector for Education at ELTE, and between 2003 and 2012, he was the Head of the Department of Algorithms and Their Applications at the Faculty of Informatics (IK). During his activities as Head of Department, the three educational pillars on which the collective has relied ever since were established; these are the subjects of algorithms, computer science and graphics.
Subjects taught: Design and analysis of algorithms, Formal languages and automata, Stochastic automata, Theoretical foundations of computer science, Fundamentals of theoretical computer science. An extraordinary teacher.
His research areas: formal languages and automata, theory and practical applications of algorithms and data structures, efficiency analysis.
Member of the ELTE Senate, President of the ELTE Public Servants Council, member of the University Sports Council, and head of the Education Committee of the Faculty of Informatics.
- As a fourth-grader, he won the National High School Mathematics Study Competition and achieved first place in the High School Mathematics Papers scoring competition.
- He is a member of the board of the Budapest University Athletics Club (BEAC), and the chair of the Table Tennis Department and the Orienteering Department.
