Lajos Hanzó
After graduating from university, he worked as a staff member and then as a senior fellow at the Telecommunications Research Institute (TKI) until 1986. During this period, he earned a doctorate from the Budapest University of Technology (BME).
Initially, he worked on the development of high-speed data transmission modems, but then he became interested in increasing the spectral efficiency of space communications.
Meanwhile, he conducted research in the field of OFDM modems at the University of Erlangen/Nuremberg (Germany) for one year (1980/81).
Following this, he was an assistant professor and then associate professor at the University of Southampton in England; from 1998 he became a professor and also the head of the Department of Telecommunications. Here he conducted research in the fields of mobile radio-based multimedia communications and quantum communications.
His research has significantly contributed to the development of 3rd, 4th and 5th generation (3G, 4G, 5G) mobile systems. His research has been supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) (England), the Mobile Virtual Centre of Excellence (VCE) (England) and the European Research Council.
He received a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Southampton (2004), an honorary doctorate from the Budapest University of Technology (2009), and an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland (2015).
In 2000, he was awarded the title of IEEE Distinguished Lecturer by the American Electrical Engineering Society, and in 2004, he became an “IEEE Fellow.” From 2009 to 2012, he was an Honorary Chaired Prof. at Tsinghua University (Beijing). In 2011, he was elevated to Fellow status by the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP).
During his career, he was the main author of 19 books (published by the Anglo-American John Wiley & Sons Publishing House); he co-authored more than 1,900 articles. He was the editor-in-chief of IEEE Press from 2009 to 2012.
Honors: Pollak–Virág Award (Hírközlési és Informatikai Tudományos Egyesület (HTE), 1982, 1992); WIPO Award (World Intellectual Property Organisation, 1985); IEEE Fellow (2004); Tivadar Puskás Award (HTE, 2010); Sir Monti Finniston Award (Institute of Engineering Technology, 2008); Radio Communications Award (IEEE Communication Society, USA); Wireless Technical Committee Award (IEEE Communication Society, USA); Signal Processing for Communications Electronics Award (IEEE Communication Society, USA); IEEE Communications Society Education Award (2018); EURASIP Papoulis Award (European Association for Signal Processing, 2018).
