István Győri

Date of birth:
1943.07.20.
Place of birth:
Sárbogárd
Date of death:
2022.03.12.
Education, professional qualification:
  • mathematician - JATE - 1968.
  • Academic degree:
Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences - 1992

After graduating from university, his first job was at the Medical University of Szeged (SZOTE), where he was the founder of the Computer Science Center (SZK) and its head until 1993. With his organization and contribution, the network infrastructure of SZOTE was built, and numerous medical IT applications were implemented. The Computer Science Center conducted internationally renowned research in the field of biomathematical modeling.

From 1987 to 1989 he was a visiting professor at the University of Rhode Island (Kingston, RI, USA). During this time, in addition to his teaching work, he published a monograph and several articles on the oscillation of solutions of differential equations with delayed arguments in collaboration with Professor G. Ladas.

He earned his PhD in 1976 and his Doctorate of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1992.

From 1993 he was a university professor at the University of Veszprém (then at the University of Pannonia), where he was the head of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and the head of the IT teacher training program until his retirement. He was the founder and head of the Differential Equations and Applications Research Laboratory, and was the rector of the University of Veszprém between 1995 and 1998. In 1994 he received the title of Professor Niemeyer Fernandez Honorary Professor of the University of Chile. Between 1996 and 2000 he received the Széchenyi Professorial Scholarship. Since 2013 he has been a professor emeritus at the University of Pannonia.

His professional interests cover a wide spectrum of the qualitative theory of differential and difference equations; he has also dealt with biomathematical and medical informatics issues. His interest in biomathematics motivated him to intensively work on the theory of differential equations. Two of his outstanding achievements are: the proof of the fundamental theorem of oscillation for differential equations with delayed arguments (jointly with O. Arino) and the previously mentioned monograph (Oscillation Theory of Delay Differential Equations, 1991) written with G. Ladas, which is considered a fundamental work in the theory. He has published more than 200 publications.

Founding member of the Department of Medical Biology of the National Institute of Health Sciences and the organizing committee of the conference series "Computer Science and Cybernetics in Healthcare and Biology"; former secretary and president. Member of the Directory Board of the International Society of Difference Equations since 2001. Member of the editorial board of more than ten international professional journals.

His most important professional awards: Géza Grünwald Memorial Medal (Bolyai János Mathematical Society, 1973); Neumann Prize (NJSZT, 1992); Albert Szent-Györgyi Prize (2000); Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2009).

    And what else is important
    • Married, has two children. (2018 announcement.)
    • His hobby is gardening.
