Ottó Gulyás

Date of birth:
1932.06.22.
Place of birth:
Budapest
Date of death:
1988.09.10.
Education, professional qualification:
  • mathematician - ELTE - 1960. (Evening class)
  • Academic degree:
Candidate of Hungarian Academy of Sciences - 1973.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he worked at the Telecommunications Research Institute (TKI) as the scientific head of the Information Communication and Processing Department. He participated not only in mathematical research (statistical pattern recognition, classification), but also in the establishment of practical models, the development of algorithms and their computer implementation. In essence, his PhD thesis in 1973 was written as a summary of his results in this direction, entitled: “Some mathematical issues and applications of pattern recognition”.

He joined the National Meteorological Service (OMSZ) in 1974. With his advanced and excellent mathematical background, he found areas within meteorology where he could utilize his thorough training. He did pioneering work in various meteorological applications of the theories of cluster analysis, shape recognition and classification, as well as in the development of the analysis of meteorological time series and fields. In 1978, he won an academic competition prize for his co-authored work, “Computer analysis of meteorological fields”.

His fundamental and outstanding work in publishing is the university textbook titled "Mathematical Statistical Methods in Meteorology" (co-author: Dezső Dévényi), for which he won the Hungarian Meteorological Society's Professional Literature Award.

He was a significant university lecturer and was one of the initiators and organizers of the re-introduction of actuarial mathematics to university education. He established a mathematical school around himself, from which university doctors, aspirants, and candidates emerged.
