Laszlo Gulyas
He is the director of the Budapest hub of EIT Digital (EIT: European Institute of Innovation and Technology, Information and Communication Technologies). He has been working on agent-based modeling of complex social systems and artificial intelligence since 1996. He has worked at the Central European University (CEU), the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer Science and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI), Harvard University, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) and AITIA International Zrt., and taught at the Universitat de Barcelona.
Between 2003 and 2015, he was the Research Director responsible for research and development projects at AITIA International Zrt.; he headed one of the company's divisions. The company was among the 4 fastest growing Hungarian technology companies on the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 list between 2007 and 2010 (first place in 2009).
Later, he worked at the Department of Artificial Intelligence at ELTE.
His activities are roughly equally divided between higher education, research and the business world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). His special interest is in maintaining and nurturing the links between the academic and business worlds: helping to bring fresh scientific and technological results to the market, and presenting business perspectives in education.
By 2018, he had published more than 70 scientific papers and participated in the review committees of more than 35 international conferences. In addition to 11 Hungarian research and development grants, he was involved in the creation of 7 successful European Union research projects.
He is a member of the European Society for Social Simulation (ESSA) and the Hungarian Society for Social Simulation. In the latter, he was the secretary of the Talent Management and Artificial Intelligence departments, at various times.
Winner of the first annual János Kemény Award of the Hungarian National Academy of Sciences (2001).
- As a child, he wrote game and educational programs for the Commodore family of computers for Novotrade's Octasoft and DeltaSoft studios.
- He was a former member of the Hungarian team that participated in the International Student Olympiad in Informatics in 1990 and 1991. Later, for a decade, he was one of the preparatory teachers for the Olympic team members, and later deputy team leader.
- Member of the organizing committee of the Tihamér Nemes National Informatics Study Competition between 1991 and 2006.
- Married, father of three children.
