András Gróf (Andy Grove)
István András Gróf was born in Budapest in 1936 to a Jewish family. He began his higher education at ELTE, a chemistry department, but emigrated to the United States after the suppression of the 1956 revolution. He continued his studies at the City College of New York and graduated at the top of his class in 1960 with a degree in chemical engineering.
He received his PhD from Berkeley in 1963. He then worked in the research and development department of Fairchild Semiconductor.
In 1968, two Fairchild employees, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, known for the law named after him, founded the Intel Corporation in Silicon Valley. Intel created the world's first microprocessor in 1971, and by the early 1990s had become the world's largest semiconductor and chip manufacturer.
He served as president of Intel Corporation from 1979, as chief executive officer from 1987, and as chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors from 1997. He stepped down as chief executive officer in 1998, but remained chairman of the board until May 2005. He then served as senior advisor to Intel. Intel has been a driving force in computing innovation ever since.
He was a key influence on Intel's leadership in terms of work discipline and management; his leadership style served as an example for other IT companies to follow. He has written several books on the subject, the most popular of which is "Only the Paranoid Survive", published in 1996.
The American magazine Time named him Person of the Year in 1997.
- Family: two daughters.
- “Perhaps no one has had as much of an impact on the formation of Intel, Silicon Valley and the way we think about technology today as Andy Grove,” said Pat Gelsinger, a longtime Intel executive who is now chairman and CEO of software maker VMware Inc. “I wouldn’t be where I am and who I am without Andy, my mentor and friend for 30 years,” he added.
- "I feel lucky to have been one of those people. He was one of the front men in the creation of the personal computer industry, and whenever we spent time together, I was impressed by his insight and foresight," emphasized Bill Gates, founder and owner of Microsoft.
