Zsolt Gerl
After graduating from university, he started working as a research engineer at the Electronic Measuring Instruments Factory (EMG). His duties included managing the acceptance of the French CII 10010 third-generation computer, designing the control system for the EMG 830 second-generation computer, and then supervising the serial production. He was the group leader of the Digital Development - Third Generation Computer department, and then its head from 1969.
From 1971 he worked in the Hardware Systems Laboratory (HRL) of the Computer Research Institute (SZKI). From 1983 he led the software supply of Proper computers designed and manufactured by SZKI. His task was to introduce the first Hungarian-language programs to the domestic market, as well as to participate in the development of the IBM 370/125 prototype R15 computer and reverse engineer the hardware/software interface.
From 1980 he went to the SZKI Software Laboratory (SRL) as deputy laboratory head. Here he continued to develop the M08X, and then the Proper 16 computer operating system (PROPOS-16) developed at SZKI. From 1983 he was the head of the Laboratory until 1988. One of their well-known developments was the GEM Draw Plus application program package (the Hungarian version of the GEM/3 software of the Digital Research company), in which figures could be produced from freehand drawn or predefined shapes.
In 1989, he became the managing director of the then-established SZKI Computer Média Rt. Together with the Magyar Közlöny Kiadó, they were the first to publish a domestic electronic publication: the Collection of Effective Laws. Their most important developments were: the PC-based REDAKTOR electronic editorial framework program - several hundred of the specific system were sold; the Irnok text editor (the Hungarian version of XyWRITE III Plus, supplemented with spell-checking functions); the GEM Desktop 3.0 graphical environment with the GEM Draw Plus drawing program; the REGISTER secretarial system; the TYPO publication editing workstation (the Hungarian version of Xerox Ventura Publisher 2.0), of which more than two hundred were sold.
Between 1992 and 1994, he was the President and CEO of Computer Media Computer Development and Main Contractor Ltd. As a reseller of the American company FileNet's computer system based on optical disk technology, their first customer was the National Police Headquarters.
Between 1994 and 1996, he participated in the preparation of the domestic application of the Staffware workflow system at the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) Computer and Administration Management Company (SZÜV).
From 1996, he led the development of a Staffware-based national office network system at Unisoftware Rendszerház, and then at its successor T-Systems Unisoftware, participating in other projects as well. He was also responsible for the professional management of the Workflow automation workshop.
From 2004, he designed closed virtual community systems in his company W-CONTROL Bt., as well as workflow applications as a domestic partner of the Staffware market. He retired in the same year.
