József Gergely
His first job was at the then-established MTA Cybernetics Research Group (KKCS), where he worked as a group leader and then as a department head from 1959. He was one of those who created the first application programs for the first computer built there, the M-3. Later, in the successor institution, the MTA Computer Center (SZK), his task was to create computer solutions to various scientific problems.
From 1970, he was the group leader and then the department head of Numerical Methods at the Computer Science and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In the meantime, he taught numerical methods and computer programming as a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Science (TTK) of ELTE for several years.
From 1981 until his retirement, he worked at the Surveying and Remote Sensing Institute (FÖMI). His task was to develop geodetic applications of mathematics and computer science. He also created a surveying and geographical nomenclature database.
He has more than 50 professional and scientific publications.
Honors: Silver Medal of the Order of Labor Merit (1972); Lifetime Achievement Award (NJSZT, 2015).
