Csaba Gergely
After graduating from university, he worked at the Information Processing Laboratory (Infelor), first as a computer maintenance operator, and then performed system development tasks.
Later, as a reviewer and co-author, he participated in the preparation of the teaching materials and notes of the Computer Science Education Center (Számok) - on the topics of card readers and punches, magnetic data recording, virtual libraries, etc. He was a member of the Computer Science Application Development Council (SZAT) managed by the Central Statistical Office, and headed its tool application working committee. He was a recognized domestic expert in remote data processing; his knowledge of German and English was outstanding.
In 1969, he worked at the Ministry of Finance Computer Center (PMSZK), and then, after the Computer Center was transformed, at the Financial Computing Institute (PSZTI) for more than 20 years. First as deputy technical director, then as technical director, he managed the Institute's tool development and participated in the management of the development of the financial information system (PIR). As technical manager of a user organization, it was here that he came into contact with Siemens computers.
He participated in the work of the National Electrotechnical Committee of the Hungarian Standards Committee as a representative of Siemens. He also participated in the work of the United Nations (UN) as an expert on two occasions.
He has published several papers and given numerous lectures, including a lecture at the IFIP World Conference in Tokyo in 1980.
In his retirement years, he became a communications consultant and press spokesperson for Siemens Rt.; he was co-editor, for example, of the Siemens 2005 report. In 2014, he was editor of “hi!tech”, the Innovation Magazine of Siemens Austria.
He has been a member of the Hungarian Computer Science Society since its founding. As the secretary of the Computer Science Department, he participated in the organization of several highly successful national and international conferences and conference series (e.g. COMNET). In 1981, he became a member of the National and Executive Boards of the Hungarian Computer Science Society, while between 1990 and 1994 he was the Vice President of the Society. In 1986 and 1989, he was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Third and Fourth Congresses of the Hungarian Computer Science Society, while in 1992 he was a member of the Program Committee of the Fifth Congress of the Hungarian Computer Science Society. He participated in the editing of the publication Computing in Hungary, which was published three times in the 1990s.
From 1990, he was a national and TC6 representative of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) on behalf of the Hungarian Information Society, and was a member of the General Assembly between 1991 and 2001. In 1998, he was elected as an IFIP Trustee for two years and was asked to lead the Admission Committee. He played a key role in the five-year application process for the IFIP Vienna-Budapest World Congress, and then in the preparation and organization of the event (WCC'98).
