Ákos Fóthi
From 1968 to 1970, he taught at the Kazincbarcika Chemical Industrial Technical School. From 1970, he worked at the Department of Numerical and Mechanical Mathematics, then General Computer Science, Faculty of Science (TTK) of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) as an assistant professor. In 1975, he obtained a university doctorate, and in 2002, he successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled “A Relational Model of Programming”.
From 1970 until the establishment of the ELTE Faculty of Informatics (IK) in 2003, he played an important role in the organizational transformations of ELTE, as well as in the development and further development of the topics of various software technology subjects. Between 1990-96, he was a member of the Faculty Council of the ELTE TTK, and between 1996-2000, he was a member of the University Council. In 2003, he was appointed associate professor.
Between 2004 and 2010, he was the head of the Department of Programming Theory and Software Technology, a member of the Council of the Faculty of Informatics of ELTE, and the chairman of its Agenda Committee.
His interests focused on programming theory and methodology, verification methods, and their applications in the natural sciences (electrochemistry, paleoanthropology). He was a school-creating personality who had a great influence on his students: he taught the basic elements of programming (instead of presenting solutions in specific programming languages) in an abstract programming approach built on the relational programming model. A large number of demonstrators and young instructors were trained and started their teaching work under his guidance and assistance. He regularly involved his students in his research topics and development work. He has published more than 40 publications, with more than 100 external references. He has participated in several international and domestic conferences with his publications.
He participated in the preparation and implementation of several large institutional-level applications – Central Hungary Operational Program (KMOP), Social Renewal Operational Program (TÁMOP), etc. In this regard, he also solved tasks related to several practical users (e.g. MOL, MALÉV, Geodetic Survey and Remote Sensing Institute, SZTAKI, Videoton, Tatabánya Coal Mines, National Meteorological Institute) – with the involvement of his colleagues and students.
Awards: Medal of Merit for Higher Education (Minister of National Resources, 1994); Bronze Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2002); Pro Universitate Award (ELTE, 2003); Outstanding Lecturer of the Faculty (ELTE IK, 2007); Pro Facultate Informatica Award (ELTE IK, 2007); Outstanding Lecturer of the Faculty (ELTE IK, 2011); Kalmár Award (NJSZT, 2011).
