    Between 1977 and 1979, he was a postgraduate scholar at the Department of General Linguistics of the Kossuth Lajos University of Debrecen (KLTE); in 1980, he obtained his doctorate.

    From 1979 he was a researcher of formal languages at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Computer Science and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI); at first he also worked on programming theory. Between 1991 and 1996 he researched formal models of multi-agent systems at the Research Department of the Combinatorial Computer Science Research Group. Between 1997 and 2003 he became the head of the research group dealing with the modeling of multi-agent systems, and then the head of the Theoretical Computer Science Research Group. In 1993 he obtained the MTA candidate's degree and in 2003 the MTA doctoral degree.
    Since 2001, he has been a founding member of the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Informatics (IK) of ELTE, and an external member of the Doctoral School of Informatics of the University of Szeged.

    Since 2005, he has been a research professor at the Department of Algorithms and Their Applications at the Faculty of Informatics (IK) of ELTE. He became a habilitated professor in 2007, and since 2009 he has been a senior professor at the Department.

    His research areas include formal languages, multi-agent systems, bio-computing (molecular computing, membrane computing), and natural language processing. He has published over 230 papers.

    He is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Informatics and Computer Science Committee, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Mathematics Doctoral Committee, and the Hungarian National Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the Association Computability in Europe (ACiE) and the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS). He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science (IJFCS).

    Awards: Award for excellent computer science results (SZTAKI, 1994, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2008); "Best Supervisor" Award (SZTAKI, 2000); Academic Award (shared with György Vaszil, 2021).
