Informatics History Museum Foundation

The Foundation's goal is to present the development of computer science and information technology, to collect and present computer science and information technology tools in a museum (collection) style, in order to contribute to the education of computer science and information technology, to the development of information technology culture in a broader sense, and to the technical cultural heritage.

In order to achieve the aforementioned goals, the Foundation carries out activities according to the following basic objectives:

• manages his wealth,
• cooperates with computer science and other institutions to expand the IT history collection,
• maintains contact with similar foundations and institutions,
• provides cultural services.

Foundation's mission

• Storage and preservation of collected and stored materials (tools, documents, books) for posterity
• Versatile presentation of materials in permanent and temporary exhibitions
• Production of publications, education and organization of events
• Maintaining contact with domestic and foreign institutions and organizations that agree with and follow the foundation's goals
• Registering stored materials in the form of a public collection
• Promotion of IT as a cultural heritage, marketing activity for all age groups
• Financial support for activities and scholarships that support the goal

On March 30, 2007, based on the permission of the Ministry of Education and Culture, MGY/10938/2007, the ITMA is hereinafter referred to as the Museum Collection of the History of Information Technology (professional classification: museum collection of public interest) in domestic cultural life, i.e. it is a collection created according to uniform collection criteria, uniformly managed and preserved, registered and documented in a regulated manner, which represents scientific and artistic value.

A hetvenes évek közepén Kovács Győzőnek, a Neumann János Számítógép-tudományi Társaság frissen megválasztott főtitkárának támadt az az ötlete, hogy folyamatosan gyűjtve és tárolva, meg kellene őrizni a számítástechnika magyarországi alkalmazásainak, a hazai fejlesztéseknek és gyártásnak a tárgyi emlékeit. Összefoglaló néven Gyűjteményt kell kialakítani a számítógépekből, számítástechnikai eszközökből, modulokból, alkatrészekből.

E  kezdeményezésére indult meg az NJSZT keretében az elavult vállatoknál selejtezendő, kidobandó számítógépek, számítástechnikai eszközök és dokumentumok gyűjtése. A kitűzött cél egy olyan múzeum létrehozása volt, amely megőrzi és bemutatja a számítástechnika nemzetközi és hazai megjelenésének, alkalmazásainak, fejlődésének tárgyi és írott emlékeit.

1977-ben az NJSZT keretében megalakult  a – 3 tagú – „Technika Történeti Bizottság” Kovács Győző, Muszka Dániel, Széphalmi Géza részvételével, akik a gyűjtőmunkát elkezdték és irányították, és megalapozták a gyűjtést és így valóban ők a Gyűjtemény alapítói. Kapcsolatok révén a MOL Rt. jogelődje az algyői telepén biztosított egy, a gyűjtés számára alkalmas barakk-sort. A média támogatásának hatására ide szállították az ország minden részéből a kiselejtezésre ítélt gépeket, teljes konfigurációkat, gépegységeket, perifériákat és dokumentációkat. A barakképületek a gyűjtés időszakában lassan megteltek olyan eszközökkel, amelyek szinte teljes egészében képviselték a nemzetközi és a hazai fejlesztések eredményeit. E raktárak adtak otthont a lyukkártyás adatfeldolgozó gépektől, „monstrumokon” (Razdan-3, Minszk-22, Minszk-32, ICT, Elliot, Siemens, IBM, Honeywell stb.) keresztül, a PC XT-ig terjedő korszak jellemző számítástechnikai eszközeinek éppen úgy, mint a hazai fejlesztések mérföldköveinek pl.: M-3 dobmemóriák, Kalmár-féle logikai gép, a KFKI, EMG, GAMMA, SZTAKI, BME, VILATI, VIDEOTON, SZKI, Telefongyár stb. kutatóhelyek által produkált) gépek, berendezések.

As the barracks filled up, the Central Physical Research Institute (KFKI) helped to house the equipment that was being donated for museum preservation and that was constantly arriving. Enthusiastic collectors organized a permanent exhibition in the State Computer Service (ÁSZSZ) building, acquired storage space, and found storage in the countryside in Cegléd.

After such antecedents, realizing that this work could only be carried out within the framework of a registered organization, in 1991-1992, with the involvement of the National Technical Museum, the Hungarian Information Society and the Hungarian Society of Information Technology established the Informatics History Museum Foundation in 1992.

Jelenleg, 2025-ben az ITMA gyűjtemény mintegy 10000 darabos készlete Szegeden a volt Rókus Kórházban/Raktárbázisban  van elhelyezve, gondosan tárolva és nyilvántartva. Mivel nincs olyan nagy helyiség, terem ahol az egész gyűjteményt ki lehetne állítani, a kiválogatott eszközök (mintegy 1000 tétel) 1000 m2-en a szegedi Agorában, két szinten vannak kiállítva és bemutatva, mint Informatika Történeti Kiállítás   A kiállítás (állandó és időszakos) nyilvános tárlatvezetéssel látogatható helyszín:  Szeged, Kálvária Sgt. 23.
